Power & Low Voltage
Clean power, proper grounding and pathways sized for what comes next: the unglamorous work that keeps every other system alive.
Overview
Systems fail where the power and pathway were an afterthought
Low voltage systems are only as reliable as the power feeding them and the pathway carrying them. Undersized PoE budgets, shared circuits that brown out, missing grounding, no surge protection, no conduit to add the next cable. These are the defects we are called in to fix years later, usually during an outage.
Wiscom handles both sides. We install the dedicated circuits, receptacles, rack power, UPS and grounding that support your equipment, and the conduit, tray, sleeves and firestopping that let cable get where it needs to go safely and legally.
Everything is installed to NEC requirements and coordinated with the electrical contractor and GC on new construction, or planned around occupied space and existing conditions on a remodel.

Capabilities
What this service actually includes.
Not a category heading, but the specific work we self-perform under it.
Dedicated circuits & devices
Branch circuits for racks, AV positions, displays, gates and equipment rooms; receptacles, whips and disconnects; panel schedules updated so the next electrician knows what is where.
PoE power engineering
PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ budget calculations across the switch stack, midspan injectors where needed, and cable and bundle sizing that accounts for the heat high-wattage PoE actually generates.
UPS & backup power
Rack and wall-mount UPS sizing with real runtime calculations, managed PDUs, automatic shutdown integration, and coordination with generator circuits so critical systems ride through an outage.
Grounding, bonding & surge
Telecom grounding bus bars, rack and ladder bonding, equipotential bonding to building ground, and surge protection on power, data and outdoor camera and antenna runs.
Pathways & raceway
EMT and PVC conduit, cable tray and basket tray, sleeves and core drilling, trenching and directional boring for site work, and firestopping every penetration through a rated assembly.
Lighting & building controls
Low voltage lighting control, occupancy and daylight sensors, exterior and parking lot lighting circuits, and control wiring for building systems and equipment.

Specification
How we decide what to specify.
The reference table our estimators and engineers work from when scoping this service.
| PoE standard | Power at device | Powers | Cable we recommend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 802.3af (PoE) | 12.95 W | VoIP phones, basic APs, fixed cameras | Cat5e or better |
| 802.3at (PoE+) | 25.5 W | PTZ cameras, Wi-Fi 6 APs, door controllers | Cat6 minimum |
| 802.3bt Type 3 | 51 W | Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs, video panels, heated domes | Cat6A |
| 802.3bt Type 4 | 71 W | Displays, LED lighting, thin clients | Cat6A, bundle-aware routing |
Close-out
What you receive when we’re done.
Documentation is part of the scope, not a favor. Every power and low voltage project closes out with the same package, so the next person to touch the system, whether that is us or somebody else, can work from facts.
- Updated panel schedules and circuit directory
- PoE budget worksheet per switch and closet
- UPS runtime calculation and load list
- Grounding and bonding verification
- Firestop locations photographed and logged
- Conduit and pathway as-built with spare capacity noted
FAQ
Power & Low Voltage: common questions
The device itself does not. The switch powering it does. When a PoE switch supporting thirty cameras shares a circuit with a break room microwave, one tripped breaker takes out your entire security system. Dedicated, clearly labeled circuits for network and security equipment is basic resilience and costs very little at rough-in.
Long enough to either ride out the typical outage or shut down cleanly. Fifteen to thirty minutes covers most utility blips and gives servers time for a graceful shutdown. If you need to stay up through an extended outage, that is a generator conversation and we will size the UPS as the bridge to it.
Where the work requires it, yes: we handle permitting and inspection coordination with the local jurisdiction as part of the project, and we tell you up front which portions of a scope are permit-triggering.
Yes. We trench, directional bore under drives and walkways, install rated underground raceway and hand holes, and terminate in weatherproof enclosures for gates, cameras, lighting and building-to-building runs.
